Hyderabad, October 2023: The sixty year old iconicJawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society (JNHTS);known for the prestigious Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament,which unearthed talent of stalwarts like Zafar Iqbal, Ajit Pal Singh, Pargat Singh and even the current captain of the Indian Hockey Team, Manpreet Singh; has nominated Yash Bharwani, the grandson of the ‘Founding Father’ of the Society, Shri Inder Mohan Kapur Ji; as it’s 7th President. Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, was formed in 1964 in the fond memory of Pandit Nehru by Shri Inder Mohan Kapur Ji and other eminentcitizens from across the country.
Shri Yash Bharwani carries forward the legacy of luminaries and past presidents of the Society like Shri A.K Sen, Shri Y.B Chavan, Shri Sharad Pawar, Shri Ram Niwas Mirdha, Shri Arun Yadav and Shri Subhash Kapur. Their Excellencies, the Presidents of India, served the Society as its Chief Patrons, in the past. Yash Bharwani is the Executive Director of the Hyderabad based Gooncha Group. The Group has co-executed the 57th Senior Tournament and has also lately entered into a 5 year sponsorship agreement for the grand -old Tournament.
Shri Yash Bharwani was installed as the President of the Society at the investiture ceremony attended by the Who’s who of Delhi, at a star hotel in New Delhi, today. He will be holding the post of the President of the society for a duration of two years.
General Vijay Kumar Singh, Hon. Minister of State for CivilAviation, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India;was the Chief Guest. Kukoo Walia, Secretary General, JNHTS; Pinky Anand, former Additional Solicitor General of India; Geeta Luthra, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court; Dr Harsh Pathak, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court, Dilip Chenoy, Corporate Think Tank and former Secretary General of FICCI; Ajit Pal Singh, Arjun Awardee and Padma Shri Olympian; Gurbux Singh, Olympian, Anwar Khan, International Hockey Player, Anupam Ghulati, veteran Commentator and Hans Pal, former Member of Parliament; among others graced the occasion.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society was incorporated in the fond memory of Independent India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to promote the ecstatic National Game of Hockey. Ever since, no stone was left unturned to take it to a superior league. Gaining appreciation from various quarters. In the years to come the tournament was to be graced by Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers and Union Cabinet Ministers of India. The Nehru Cup matches have keenly been looked forward to and it has been an honour for any hockey teamto win the coveted Nehru Gold Cup.
With every passing year, the JNHT Society garnered more attention and attracted new participation. The all- time greats such as Dhanraj Pillay, Pargat Singh, Zafar Iqbal, Ajit Pal Singh and many more have played in the tournament. The exposure given to hockey players by the JNHT Society Tournaments has allowed many of them to go onto the Indian National Hockey Team, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympics. This includes the recent bronze victory of the Indian National Hockey Team’s Captain, Manpreet Singh who played the Junior and Senior Nehru Hockey Tournaments before getting into the Indian National Hockey Team.
