



Hyderabad, 7th August 2025,
The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN), Hyderabad, successfully
organized an Open Day event as part of the Science & Health Innovation for the Nextgen
Explorers (SHINE) initiative of ICMR on August 7, 2025. The event witnessed enthusiastic
participation of over 900 students from 22 schools across the city.
The SHINE programme is an ICMR initiative aimed at fostering a spirit of scientific
inquiry and awareness about health and innovation among school children. It also provides an
opportunity for the students to explore the health research activities of ICMR and the provide
career opportunities in science and health research. As part of this Open Day, students had a
unique opportunity to visit the ICMR-NIN campus, interact directly with scientists and
technical staff, and explore various exhibits and demonstrations showcasing research in
nutrition and public health.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bharati Kulkarni, Director of ICMR-NIN, emphasized
the importance of engaging with students at a young age to build a scientifically literate and
health-conscious society. “This initiative aligns with India’s vision of Viksit Bharat (by 2047)
and encourages the next generation to think innovatively and contribute to the nation’s
scientific advancement. We plan to continue organizing such events every year to nurture
young talent,” she said.
Throughout the day, ICMR-NIN scientists and staff conducted interactive sessions,
demonstrations, and guided tours for the visiting students. From understanding the basics of
nutrition science to witnessing laboratory practices, students got a first-hand look at how
research is conducted to improve public health.
The event was met with great enthusiasm by students and teachers alike, many of
whom expressed appreciation for the opportunity to visit one of India’s premier nutrition
research institutes.
